California Junior Scholarship Federation

The purpose of CJSF shall be to foster high standards of scholarship, service, and citizenship on part of California students in grades seven through nine, and to promote appropriate activities among its members.  The goal of the organization is to emphasize service to the school, to the community while fostering pride in scholastic achievement. 

Membership in CJSF is granted for the semester/trimester following the one in which the qualifying grades were earned, and is for that trimester only.  In order to become a member, the student must submit an application each trimester the student is eligible.  Grades earned in the second and third trimester of 8th grade shall count toward honor membership in the schools ending in grade 8.  All grades earned the previous trimester must be equivalent of C or better.  A grade of D or F shall debar membership for that semester.

Each year CJSF sponsors trips for its members.  Every Fall we complete a campus tour of college campus.  We have visited the following schools so far:

CSUSB (California State University, San Bernardino)
UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles)
UCI (University of California, Irvine)
UCR (University of California, Riverside)
UCSD (University of California, San Diego)

Every January, students go to the Aquarium of the Pacific and tour the Aquarium and complete a workshop with a squid dissection or how to build an aquarium. 

Every May, students go to the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles and attend the Tolerancenter/Holocaust Center Tour followed by a visit to the Anne Frank Exhibit. 

Seats are first come, first serve on all trips.  You must be a member of CJSF to attend any of our trips.  Students can participate in fundraisers or pay out of pocket to attend any of the trips for the club. 

Students who join CJSF at JWMS will be encouraged to complete at least 5 community service hours per trimester (15 hours total per year).  The club advisor will provide you with a list of options for your community service.  You are also welcome to bring your requests for community service projects. Many student complete more than 30 hours over the two years (7th and 8th grade) of their membership in CJSF.  

The academic courses that are used to qualify your membership are: English Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies.  A student establishes membership by earning academic points.  For membership, the number of points earned must be at least eight points in their academic subjects in which the student is enrolled.  

A grade of “A” counts as 3 CJSF points.
A grade of “B” counts as 1 CJSF point.
A grade of “C” counts at 0 CJSF points.

One additional point shall be granted for a grade of “A” or “B” in an Honors course, up to a maximum of two such points per semester can be earned.

In order to qualify for honor membership, you must earn membership for TWO trimesters in 7th grade and TWO trimesters in 8th grade.  Honor membership will be indicated in your cumulative record which is sent to the student’s next school (high school). 

CJSF students may also become Honors Membership Award members.  Those who qualify have the Honor Award seal placed on their certificate of promotion and are eligible to wear the CJSF gold pin and purple medallion at honors dessert and promotion.  CJSF also sponsors an awards program prior to Honors Dessert.  Each year, advisers nominate two outstanding members for special recognition in the CJSF Outstanding Student Award program.  All nominees are recognized at their spring conferences, receiving award certificates.  Those selected as winners by regional subcommittees are presented with a $250 award and medallion, in addition to the certificate. 

Students who are members of CJSF at JWMS, will quality to be a member of CSF (California Scholarship Federation) at CCHS, DHSHS, PSHS or RMHS as Freshman provided their grades meet the requirements.
